Postpartum Support Checklist

The weeks after welcoming a baby can feel beautiful, emotional, exhausting, and everything in between. Your body is recovering, hormones are shifting, and you are learning a whole new rhythm of caring for your baby.

Having a few things prepared ahead of time can make this transition a little gentler. This checklist focuses on practical ways to support your recovery, your wellbeing, and the everyday moments of the 'fourth trimester'.


Recovery & Physical Comfort

Maternity pads or postpartum pads
☐ Comfortable, loose clothing that is easy to move and feed in
High waisted or supportive underwear
☐ A water bottle to keep nearby during feeds
☐ Simple pain relief options recommended by your healthcare provider
☐ Gentle toiletries for showering and self care
☐ A small basket with essentials you can keep beside your bed or couch


Feeding Support

A comfortable place to sit for feeding
Supportive cushions or pillows for positioning baby
☐ Easy access to water and snacks while feeding
Breast pads or cloths for leaks
Feeding supplies if bottle feeding or combination feeding
A small light or lamp for overnight feeds


Rest & Sleep Support

A safe sleep space ready for baby
☐ Extra sheets and sleepwear for overnight changes
☐ A comfortable place for daytime rest
A light blanket nearby for contact naps
☐ Support from your partner, whānau, or support crew so you can rest


Daily Living Made Easier

☐ Easy meals prepared or frozen ahead of time
Snacks that are quick to grab during long days with baby
☐ A nappy changing area set up where you spend most of your time
Multiple burp cloths or muslins within reach
☐ A basket for baby essentials you can move from room to room


Emotional & Mental Wellbeing

☐ A list of trusted people you can reach out to for support
☐ Check in with your midwife, GP, or healthcare provider if something feels off
☐ Gentle reminders that recovery takes time
☐ Permission to rest and focus on yourself and baby
☐ Small moments outside for fresh air when possible
