Essential Oil Guide
Safe Use of Essential Oils with Babies and Children
Essential oils are often talked about as a natural way to support sleep, calm, or help with stuffy noses. If you’ve found yourself looking into them, you’re definitely not alone.
At Baby On The Move, we know many families are simply trying to find gentle ways to support their baby through everyday moments. Things like unsettled sleep, winter sniffles, or creating a calm space at home.
When used thoughtfully, essential oils can help create a calm environment, support relaxation, and be a gentle addition during times like unsettled sleep or seasonal sniffles. They can have a place, but they are not essential, and when it comes to babies and young children, safety always comes first.
Understanding Essential Oils
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. Even though they’re natural, they are powerful.
When applied to the skin or inhaled, they can be absorbed by the body relatively quickly. This is part of what makes them effective, but also why they need to be used carefully.
For babies and children, less really is more.
Why Extra Care Is Needed for Babies
Babies are much more sensitive than adults.
- Their skin is thinner and absorbs more easily
- Their airways are smaller and more delicate
- Their sense of smell is stronger
- Their bodies are still developing and processing substances
Because of this, even small amounts or repeated exposure can lead to irritation or unwanted reactions.
That’s why essential oils should never be part of a daily routine for babies, and only used when there is a clear purpose.
A Simple, Safe Approach
If there’s one thing to take away, it’s this:
Essential oils are not something your baby needs, but they can be a helpful addition when used occasionally and with care.
Many families use them during:
- unsettled sleep periods
- times when baby has a cold or congestion
- creating a calm, relaxing environment
Keep use:
- occasional
- low exposure
- well ventilated
- and always age-appropriate
A Safer Way to Support Baby at Home
Before reaching for essential oils, it’s helpful to look at the environment around your baby.
For many families, especially during colder months, products like humidifiers and vaporizers can help:
- add moisture to dry air
- support easier breathing
- create a more comfortable sleep space
A cool mist humidifier is often the simplest place to start, helping relieve dryness without adding anything extra into the air.
If you’re using essential oils, a quality diffuser allows oils to be dispersed gently into the air rather than applied directly to your baby’s skin. This can be a more controlled option when used for short periods and in a well-ventilated space.
At Baby On The Move, we stock a carefully selected range of humidifiers, vaporizers, and diffusers to help you create a comfortable, supportive space at home. If you’re unsure where to start, our team is here to help you choose what suits your family best.
Important Safety Guidelines
Do not ingest essential oils
Essential oils should never be added to food, drinks, or taken internally.
They can irritate the mouth and stomach and may cause serious harm, especially for babies and children.
Even though essential oils are used in food manufacturing, those products are specially processed and are not the same as the oils used at home.
Never apply undiluted oils
Essential oils should never be used directly on the skin.
Always dilute them in a carrier oil to reduce the risk of irritation or sensitivity.
Avoid unnecessary exposure
Essential oils should not be used “just because”.
Avoid:
- daily use
- constant diffusing
- using oils in spaces your baby spends long periods in without purpose
Fresh air and a balanced environment should always come first.
Store safely
Always keep essential oils well out of reach of children.
Suitable Essential Oils (3 Months to 6 Years)
Only a limited number of essential oils are considered suitable for use with young children, and even then, only in small amounts and when needed.
Suitability can vary depending on your child’s age, health, and sensitivity, so it’s always best to check before use.
These include:
- Lavender
- Roman Chamomile
- Frankincense
- Mandarin, Orange, Lemon, Bergamot
- Sandalwood
- Tea Tree
- Geranium
- Sweet Marjoram
- Cedarwood
- Ginger
- Cypress
- Ylang Ylang
- Rosewood
- Rose Otto
- Thyme (sweet)
- Eucalyptus (radiata, smithii, or globulus only)
- Rosemary (avoid if there is a history of epilepsy)
If you’re unsure, it’s always best to ask before using any oil around your baby.
How to Use Essential Oils Safely
Diffusing (most common approach)
Diffusing is often the gentlest way to use essential oils in a home environment.
Keep it simple:
- Use for short periods only (around 30 minutes for babies)
- Allow fresh air into the room
- Use only 1–2 drops for babies
- Avoid continuous or overnight diffusing
Always use oils with a purpose, not as a background habit.
Topical Use (on the skin)
If applying to the skin:
- Always dilute in a carrier oil
- Use very low concentrations
- Apply to a small area only
Recommended dilution:
- 3–24 months: 2–4 drops per 40ml carrier oil
- 2–6 years: 7–14 drops per 35ml carrier oil
Baths
Never add essential oils directly to bath water.
Instead:
- Mix with liquid soap first
- Then add to the bath
This helps prevent oils sitting directly on your baby’s skin.
Reactions to Watch For
Every child is different, so it’s important to watch for signs that something isn’t quite right.
These may include:
- skin irritation or rashes
- watery eyes
- coughing or breathing changes
- irritability
- tummy discomfort
If you notice any of these, stop using the oil and seek advice.
When to Seek Support
If your baby has any medical conditions, or if you’re unsure about using essential oils, it’s always best to speak with a health professional.
For anything ongoing, a qualified practitioner can guide you safely.
A Gentle Reminder
When it comes to babies, simple often works best.
Clean air, a comfortable sleep space, and responsive care go a long way. Essential oils can be a helpful addition for some families, but they work best when used lightly and with intention.
If you’re exploring options like humidifiers, vaporizers, or diffusers, our team at Baby On The Move is here to help you find what feels right for your home and your baby.
Because when it comes to your little one, it’s the small, thoughtful choices that matter most.
